Philadelphia soul singer Tena Riley brought a little history and a lot of harmony to episode 60 of R&B Showcase TV. Hosted by Tim Marshall with Kevin White and Julian Seward, the show welcomed Riley alongside two legends who sing backup with her, Maryam “Coco” Muhammad Jordan of The Orlons and Olive Joseph of The Chantels. Riley discovered her voice at age 10, singing on her North Philadelphia steps late at night, and went on to spend about 11 years on the road as a background singer for Billy Paul of “Me and Mrs. Jones” fame.
Tena Riley and Her Tribe of Legends
The conversation is full of stories longtime soul fans will love, from Riley landing the Billy Paul gig by auditioning with an Emotions song, to Jordan’s 38 years with The Orlons, to Joseph’s own tours with Billy Paul as far as Brazil. All three name Gladys Knight as a major influence. They credit their staying power to sisterhood and a willingness to step in and sing backup for one another whenever it’s needed. For aspiring artists, their advice is practical: learn the business side, copyright your songs, and find your tribe.
The episode closes with live performances, including Riley’s single “Love Thing.” Riley, who also runs Tena Riley Promotions, has a show featuring a Gladys Knight tribute scheduled for December 6 in South Philadelphia, and the hosts fondly recalled a recent night together at Legacy Hall in Camden.
