From a Prison Poetry Class to the Big Screen: Jose “Slick” Perez on The Hype Cave

Published

on

North Camden’s own Jose “Slick” Perez sits down for episode 10 of The Hype Cave to share how a poetry class during his years in prison sparked a writing career that now includes books, film, and producing. Perez wrote 13 books and hundreds of spoken word poems while behind the wall, and now with co-writer Thomas “T Black” Freeman, he turned his life story into Sons of Sin. That book became a film starring Jamal Woolard, best known for playing Biggie in Notorious, alongside Camden’s own Porta Rich. It’s streaming now on Tubi, Amazon Prime, and Uplift TV.

Why the Jose Slick Perez Episode Is Worth Watching

The conversation goes well past the movie. Perez talks about growing up in North Camden, breakdancing with the North Camden Breakers, and his brother bringing home records from Broadway Eddie’s, one of Camden famous ways to get the latest in music. He shares why Camden native Tasha Smith is his dream casting pick and what’s next on his slate, including Cold Dish and a Jersey Devil horror project. Local actors should stick around to the end, where he talks about upcoming casting calls for Camden talent. It’s an honest, hopeful story about second chances and building something from the ground up. Watch the full episode above.
