Sons of Sin 2 movie poster, a crime drama filmed and set in Camden, NJ, now streaming free on Tubi

If you’ve been waiting to catch Sons of Sin 2 without paying for it, now’s your chance. The Camden-made sequel hit Tubi on October 22, so you can stream it for free. Until now, the only way to see it was to buy it on Amazon Prime Video.

The film continues the story that started with the first Sons of Sin, a crime drama set in North Camden during the 1980s and ’90s. And just like part one, it’s rooted in real life.

What Sons of Sin 2 Is About

Here’s the setup. After 20 years in prison for murders he didn’t commit, Jay comes home looking for the truth. At the same time, he’s fighting to reconnect with his son.

Camden County OEO Gala Flyer

That’s a big shift from the first film. Part one followed childhood friends Jay and Quan as they rose through the drug trade and paid the price for it. Part two is about what comes after the sentence is served.

The movie runs about an hour and 40 minutes and is rated TV-MA. So yeah, it’s grown folks viewing.

Who’s in It

The leading cast includes:

  • Jose Perez
  • Mena Monroe
  • Olivia Lee
  • Porta Richard Nunez
  • Najah Hill

Thomas Freeman Jr. and Jose Perez share directing credit.

The Real Camden Story Behind the Movie

Jose “Slick” Perez was born and raised in North Camden. He served 24 years in prison, and that’s where the writing started.

In an interview on The Hype Cave podcast, Perez explained that a “healing through poetry” class pushed him to write a play about his own life. That play grew into the book Sons of Sin, which he co-wrote with Thomas “T Black” Freeman. He went on to write 13 books while he was inside.

Now here’s where part two gets personal. In the first movie, his nephew Isaiah Perez played the younger version of the character. In the sequel, that character comes home from prison as a grown man, and Perez plays him himself. Keep in mind, though, that it’s a dramatized story inspired by his life, not a documentary.

From a Sold-Out Premiere to Free Streaming

The original Sons of Sin premiered at the AMC in Cherry Hill, where Perez says they sold out two theaters. That film featured Jamal Woolard, best known for playing Biggie in Notorious, along with Porta Richard Nunez and Apollo Ali.

Perez said the money from the first movie went right back into making the second. “Even if the movie would have never done nothing,” he told the podcast, “I done this.”

What’s Next for Perez

He’s not slowing down. Perez says he’s already started adapting his third book, Cold Ditch, into a film. He also mentioned a psychological horror project about the Jersey Devil with his partner Terrence Chambliss.

He’s also said future productions will hold casting calls for local talent. For a filmmaker who started out writing in a cell, that’s a lot of Camden opportunity in the pipeline.
