Brian McKnight Wows the Crowd at Camden’s Sunset Jazz Series

The Sunset Jazz Series at Wiggins Park kept the good vibes rolling Monday night, June 15, when R&B legend Brian McKnight took the stage on the Camden City Waterfront. Presented by Rutgers University–Camden, the weekly Monday night series at 8 p.m. has quickly become one of the highlights of the summer season, and this latest show proved it. McKnight ran through a set full of his biggest hits, and the crowd, especially the women in attendance, sang along to every word.

It turned out to be one of the most attended shows I have experienced, up there with Kirk Franklin. The park was packed, especially the floor and top area. Great that the  organizers brought in extra screens so nobody missed a moment, even if their view got blocked or they couldn’t snag a spot up front. Add in one of the cooler evenings of the summer, cool enough that nobody even needed a jacket, and it made for about as perfect a night as you could ask for on the waterfront.

The Sunset Jazz Series isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Up next is Pieces of a Dream on June 29, followed by Kid ‘N Play on July 13, Boney James on July 19, a Michael McDonald tribute called Minute By Minute on August 3, Will Calhoun celebrating the 100th anniversary of Miles Davis on August 24, the Miguel Zenón Quartet on August 31, and Victor Wooten & The Wooten Brothers closing things out on September 14. Grab your chair and head down to Wiggins Park, Mondays at 8 p.m., for the rest of a summer packed with great music on the Camden waterfront.
