If you’re a creator, you can surely understand the excitement of a gathering like South Jersey’s Creator’s Summit that took place on the campus of Dare Academy. It’s like a concert, party and networking event, with a purpose! A day full of learning, entertainment and creativity. But imagine this – the Summit also has musical performances, vendors and a panel of creators doing Q&A! You can imagine the excitement for an event like this to come to Camden.

Thomas Freeman Jr and Demetrius Hill hosted “Independent Filmmaking,” where they gave attendees an overview of the movie making process. Dave Money shared the basics of sewing so attendees could create their very own shoulder bag at his workshop “Fashion 101”. Jay Chin and Barry Greeene taught “Music Production 101” where participants discovered how to use studio equipment to develop their own unique sound. To round things up in style Desi Shelton and Sommadah Hunter introduced attendees to “Play & Film Writing.”

As the day progressed it was not time for the first half of the musical performance acts. However, the guests were blessed to have some of the area’s hottest DJs playing music for intermissions, the rev up the crowd or assist with the artist. The featured djs were, no other than, DJ Ju, DJ Caesar and the infamous DJ Alamo. Some of the talent that performed were Shakil, Mike Rexx, Jay Copes, D Sturdy and none other than Philadelphia’s legendary MC, Beanie Siegel. The energy in the audience was electric as we sang and danced along to the music. It was incredible to see how music and content creation can come together to create something truly special. The artists even shared their own stories of how they got started in the industry and offered advice to anyone trying to make it in the music world.

There were also awards given out posthumously to Camdenites who contributed greatly to the music scenes.  Those included Victor Carstarphen, Sr. who worked closely with Gene McFaddden and John Whitehead during the 1970’s. Evette Benton who song alongside Carla Benson and Barbara Ingram, forming the group Sweethearts of Sigma or more widely known as “the Sweeties.” Jimmy Williams was also celebrated, a bass guitarist who worked with the O’jays and the McFadden and Whitehead reign in music.

The Q&A section was particularly a great way to get insight into the minds of some of South Jersey’s more creative minds. A panel including Verb Spielberg, Porta Rich, Thomas Freeman Jr, Apollo Ali, Majer Lewis and more.

As the day came to an end, we were all feeling inspired and excited about the future of us working together and networking at  more events such as the Creator’s Summit.. We had made new friends, learned new skills, and enjoyed some amazing music. It was truly a great day!

Lastly, I want to express my sincere gratitude towards Anthony Ways and his Dare Academy team along with WCMD family for their vision in creating such an incredible event that inspired us all!
