Camden County Weatherization Day: What safer, warmer homes mean for our neighbors

Published

on

Camden County OEO showed up in the rain. When the weather gets rough, local leaders still get the work done. At Camden County OEO’s Weatherization Day, residents, officials, and program staff gathered to celebrate a simple promise that matters at home.

The focus was local. The outcomes are life changing. The Camden County OEO Weatherization Day program helps families cut bills, improve health and safety, and stay warm without taking on debt.

Why Weatherization Matters Now

Energy costs keep families up at night. In Camden and across South Jersey, those costs weigh heaviest on seniors, parents with young kids, and neighbors living with disabilities. Weatherization turns that around by sealing drafts, improving ventilation, and replacing inefficient equipment at no cost to participants. It is not cosmetic work. It is essential infrastructure for everyday life.

“That should not be a political issue. So today it is not.”

James W., Executive Director, Camden County OEO

Inside the Program

Attendees heard clear examples from neighbors who benefited this year. Insulated attics and crawlspaces. Continuous-run bath fans for healthy airflow. Sealed basement doors and siding. Even efficient appliances, when warranted. The result is a home that holds heat in the winter and keeps cool in the summer.

The OEO team runs intake and eligibility, audits each home, and coordinates long-standing local contractors. Quality control inspectors measure needs and verify work. Data staff log every measure so upgrades match real usage and safety requirements. It is a full-team relay focused on health, safety, and lower bills.

Residents testified to warmer rooms and safer systems. One neighbor shared how the work ended the shuffle of extension cords to power an electric blanket. Another listed the long set of fixes she could not have afforded alone. Dignitaries added that they, too, had relied on OEO programs growing up or during hard seasons. This is a public service with a personal footprint.

Beyond Weatherization: Energy Assistance and Lead Safety

The broader safety net was on display. LIHEAP and the Universal Service Fund help with one-time benefits and monthly credits to keep heat and lights on. The new Lead Remediation and Abatement Program serves pre-1978 homes in Camden and Burlington Counties, covering remediation and abatement for eligible households. Applications are already outpacing initial goals, underscoring the need.

How to access the help

  • Start with intake. Bring income documents and details about your home’s heating source.
  • Expect an energy audit. Inspectors measure what your home truly needs.
  • Work is coordinated. Contractors schedule upgrades. No liens. No out-of-pocket costs for participants.
  • Ask about add-ons. LIHEAP, USF credits, and medical-need cooling benefits can stack where eligible.
  • Spread the word. Neighbors help neighbors find programs that keep households stable.
